Editing Hawaiian Words

I know that for the test this coming Friday we will need to know how to correctly spell Hawaiian words. How do we write the insertion mark for a kahakou? I can see indicating the need for an 'okina the same way one would an apostrophe, but do we use a caret or just draw a line over the vowel?

Chicago Manual says to strike the letter and rewrite it with the diacritical mark.

Say you have the word Waikiki and want to insert the macron above the second and third i's. You cross out those letters and write above each an i with a macron. Note that in the case of the i, you do not write the dot; if you take a look at your Hawaiian dictionary, you'll see that macrons are inserted where the dot appears.
