No English errors here; just stupidity

I can't figure out if the Advertiser was just trying to be funny when they republished this AP article:
Hawaii ranked as top state to avoid collision with deer

Incidentally, we are also ranked as the top state to avoid snakebites, frostbite, and Seasonal Affective Disorder. Okay, I just made that up. :P But come on!

Sometimes the newspaper folks have to use what's called filler material. Someone in the newsroom probably got the press release and decided to give the item a headline with a local angle.

I'll write my friend George Beetham, a newspaper editor, to see what he says about this…

That is more likely a case of a lazy copy editor who didn't take time to think about what was being picked up. AP copy is sent out to AP subscribers around the world and it's up to local editors to wade through the chaff for some grain.

If it was printed for the humor, it should have been rewritten to reflect that.
